BADVRIL

Badvril is a San Francisco-based noise-pop project, lovingly self identified as, "backwoods rock". Existing at the intersection of chaos, tension, self-expression and creative control— Badvril blends music, film, art and fashion into a fully immersive world. Founded by singer Becket Schroeder, the band is rooted in a DIY ethos shaped in rural Eastern Washington, where he learned to create out of necessity-building stages, making merch, and recording music with whatever was available. After leaving home as a teenager, Becket relocated to the Bay Area, at one point living out of his car while writing the first Badvril songs in a Berkeley parking lot. That relentless, whatever-it-takes mentality is the driving force behind the project. The idea that launched Badvril was complete when Becket found his counterpart in drummer and world yo-yo champion Tessa Piccillo, whose creative perspective helped expand Badvril's vision into something larger than music alone. The two coincidentally connected through a mutual friend after posting online the same day looking for a band. Bringing together their unique stories of perseverance, Badvril was born. Small town isolation meets frenetic city life, combining the sounds of narcotic grunge, and pop music. Since forming in 2022, the band has toured the U.S. performing everywhere from DIY venues to a yo-yo competition, and debuted their album In Heaven live for inmates at Washington State Prison. For Badvril, there's no line between life and art-only the blur between them. And once you enter their world, it doesn't let you go.

THE CONVENIENCE

For New Orleans duo The Convenience, it’s all about the search for a new level of raw expression. With their second LP, Like Cartoon Vampires, that meant creating with their hands much more than buttons or switches, entranced by a hypnotic physicality and collage-y, spur-of-the-moment approach to composition. This led to a beautifully fucked-up avant-rock soundworld, peppered with spidery, atonal guitar work, pointy rhythms, and strident feedback. Such developments may come as a shock for anyone who’s heard their 2021 debut album Accelerator, a sugary funk-pop wonderland. But songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Nick Corson and Duncan Troast are following what makes them most giddy right now: cathartic noise-rock, enigmatic drone, and playful experimentalism. While in many regards, Like Cartoon Vampires is a total reinvention, it’s also a return to their roots. They describe Accelerator as a pit stop into groovy synth-pop, heavily inspired by their time in fellow Crescent City group Video Age, rather than a permanent move into their sonic dream home. Corson studied guitar and performed in rock bands for most of his life, while Troast grew up primarily playing the piano and keys. Eventually, Corson experienced bouts of disillusionment with his instrument of choice, in part due to his formalist training, but once Troast fell down a rabbit hole of strange guitar music he’d never heard, a twinkle formed in Corson’s eye, as he was eager to share his knowledge. Troast pored over early Fall LPs and was magnetized by the mutant disco and no wave of ZE Records, which bridged the gap between his funky predilections and post-punk fascinations. The pair also rekindled their love of krautrock and bonded over a budding interest in classical minimalism and guitarist Glenn Branca. Once they started working on new material, it was clear that they wanted to loosen up and go full-on mad scientist with the electric guitar. Sessions were characterized by gnarly, improvisational jams, which were then edited, and they tinkered with everything from cassette loops, found sounds, and 808s to prepared guitar and harmolodic tunings. As for their dual guitar work, Corson found defying conventions thrilling, and Duncan reveled in an ignorance of the notes he was playing. From both poles, it was pure frenzied emotion plugged straight into amplifiers, as they composed with a more physical, impulsive approach. Tracks like “Target Offer” and “Fake the Feeling” quake with ear-splitting guitar feedback, while “Pray’r” and “Rats” eschew their groove worship in favor of haunting minimalism. Song after song, Accelerator’s pop influences are traded in for more eccentric frontiers—James Brown for James Blood Ulmer, Prince for Pere Ubu—but the clear common denominators of their first two records are spellbinding funky instincts and a mastery of texture. Their exuberant pop sensibilities also poke out with relative frequency, especially on the melodic post-punk opener “I Got Exactly What I Wanted” and the tender, bucolic “Vanity Shapes,” complete with violin from Lawn’s Mac Folger. Lyrically, Like Cartoon Vampires collects dispatches from a dying empire. Characters are devoured by alienation and vanity, though society doesn’t bat an eye, sleeping comfortably under the blanket of American rugged individualism and consumerism-as-culture dogma. The despair is alarmingly mundane, as dystopian markers like self-driving cars and “designer toothpaste” are plentiful but matter-of-fact, and in this sphere, the only choices that seem to multiply are the ways one can shrink inside themselves. Corson paints with a slippery tongue, artfully utilizing classic Americana, phonetic improvisation, and fragmented, surrealist word play to capture a simmering discontent that is at times sickly humorously. “I whispered something just to make sure I was still there / I was still there, rats,” Corson mutters. And his knack for Dadaist mischief knows no bounds: “Some folks love dancing / Like cars love crashing / And so I dance for hours / And I eat the wedding flowers.” But make no mistake, these songs are not merely disaffected ennui—music-making and collaboration are intensely emotional practices for The Convenience, and they reflect a shrieking lust for life. From absorbing post-punk grooves and punishing guitar squalls to bewildering experimental zig-zags, Corson and Troast get on like a house on fire, and their close friendship underpins each spontaneous exorcism, every bell and whistle. With its droning propulsion and fickle outbursts, Like Cartoon Vampires is undoubtedly a city record, and just like the modern metropolis, the full breadth of humanity is on display, warts and all. And after all, how could perfection ever compare?

KRISTEENYOUNG

The always innovative, always years ahead of time, KRISTEENYOUNG, is a no-genre, art-punk, piano and drums duo (and at times, solo artist) based in New York. Kristeen’s unique piano sound blends dissonance and bashing with melodicism; her vocals, emotive and operatic. While drummer, Jefferson Wayne “Baby Jef” White, hits hard with a soulful aggression. The signature sound has been described as “Callas meets Gang of Four with a piano” and "like Urgh! A Music War all rolled-up into one band” and from Nocturna Magazine (April 2026) “It’s rare to encounter an artist who feels truly original—rarer still one who can stop you in your tracks. Kristeen Young does both.” Young started playing piano, as a child, on the upright in the foster/adopted St. Louis home where she was raised. At first she was confused why the piano didn’t sound like the songs on the radio (which were all guitar based at the time). This disappointment (and eventual goal) became an important building block in creating her own sound. A few years later she met drummer, White, when both worked at restaurant, Le Petit Cafe. They began playing music together and worked round the clock restaurant shifts to be able to move to New York. Upon arrival, they quickly gained the attention of producer, Tony Visconti, who invited David Bowie to a show. This led to Bowie recording a duet with Kristeen (on song, Saviour, that she wrote), and subsequently touring extensively as Morrissey’s support band. Currently, they’ve just finished a new album (written, produced, and mixed by Kristeen) Full Scrotal Scorpio (to be released in October 2026). In a preview of the album, journalist, René Ramos, says, “Full Scrotal Scorpio overflows with fearless creativity. Nearly every track feels like a favorite. No filler, just a thrilling collision of melody and distortion that you cannot shake.” Also, in Spring 2026, Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins asked Young to write and record a cover/arrangement of the song, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, to be used for a SP promotional video for the upcoming anniversary tour of their Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness album. The promotional video premiered in May 2026. Kristeen has always self-designed and made her own stage outfits.

THEO VANDENHOFF

The sullen yet danceable post-punk of Theo Vandenhoff is as much a pseudonymous outlet for frontman/lyricist Theo Klaver as it is a sonic chopping block at the hands of Callum Crombie (guitar) and Tom Nixon (bass). Despite being based in Toronto, Canada, their sound lends itself more to the sardonic European art pop of Klaver’s heritage and the metallic cacophony of Northern England, where Crombie and Nixon grew up. These influences fuse to form their own brand of goth-adjacent music that is equal parts nostalgic and contemporary, all while maintaining a staunchly DIY process where each step from conception to completion is conducted by the members of the band. April 2026 saw the release of their debut album Saviour On The Spilled Blood (Artoffact Records), where captivating storytelling and raw, emotional performances drive beyond aesthetics to prod at the heart of something truly unifying and deeply human.

D. SABLU

New Orleans-based D.Sablu is the artistic moniker of David Sabludowsky—a project that has evolved from one-man, drum-machine cassette tapes into an electrified, unstoppable full-band powerhouse. Standing at the crossroads of rock n roll, punk, hardcore, and electronic the sound is best described as "Elvis tunes on acid" and is delivered with breakneck Rock N’ Roll conviction. Over the last six years, D.Sablu has maintained a relentless DIY streak, culminating in the high-water mark of 2024’s first full band studio album No True Silence. The latest 7” on 11PM Records marks a new chapter. This new material captures a killer mix of Discharge, Death Side, and Poison Idea energy, all while channeling Wire, Metallica, and Straus’ Zarathustra. Critically praised as "wild and weird," D.Sablu’s music balances a gritty, lawless attitude with catchy, mid-to-fast-paced electro-punk energy. The D.Sablu live experience is visceral and frequently described as spiritual. Known for taping down only to tear up stages and turning technical malfunctions into "happy accidents," the band delivers a sweat-stained sacrifice to the gods of rock. Whether touring with Eyehategod or Prison Affair, D.Sablu proves that pure energy transcends genre boundaries. Lyrically moving between adrenaline-fueled collective catharsis and reflections on social conditioning, D.Sablu remains a sonic antithesis to the algorithm—musically unmaintainable, unstoppable, and unapologetically loud.

LESSER CARE

Formed in El Paso, Texas in 2019 by Andres Chavez and Zane Pacillas, Lesser Care is a band that exists between worlds. Too heavy to be confined by shoegaze tradition, too atmospheric to be boxed in as post-punk, and too textured to sit neatly within metal, the group instead carves out a unique space where all three converge.

WESLEY WOLFFE

Live, it's a four-piece — Jeremy Mock on guitar, Sebastian Duzian on bass, and Nick Pedroza on drums, alongside Wolffe.

CARRELLEE

Carrellee is an ethereal dark-wave singer-songwriter from Madison, Wisconsin (US). Her debut album Scale of Dreams was released in 2022 on Negative Gain Productions. The album quickly sold out (and was repressed). She supported the album by touring extensively, playing over 200 shows between 2022 and 2024. Major highlights include performances at Coldwaves Festival in Chicago, Verboden Festival in Vancouver and opening for Chris Corner from Sneaker Pimp’s solo project IAMX on a string of dates throughout the Midwest. In May 2025, Carrellee released her sophomore album via Young & Cold Records. Mixed largely by Maurizio Baggio (Boy Harsher, Sextile), with some additional production from Matia (Riki, Patriarchy) and mastered by Josh Bonati (Slowdive, Drab Majesty) the album significantly expanded her palette and following. Online music site Post-Punk describes the songs as having “eerie allure, as her soft, whispering vocals glide over scorched synths and sharp beats. Think Crystal Castles or The Knife after a hard night out, or Ladytron with a little more edge." The album’s biggest single “Captain” has been streamed over a million times on Spotify since its release. Carrellee also spent much of 2024 and 2025 touring Europe and the US as the backing vocalist and synth player for IAMX. In 2026, Carrellee will perform at Terminus Festival in Calgary and Coldwaves Festival in Chicago, as well as headline a 30 date, US Tour this Spring, and co-headline a Fall US Tour with darkwave postpunk Dutch artist Bragolin. New releases include include the 2026 Remixes, from her self-titled album—remixes from IAMX, Bragolin, Omar Doom, and Brood Faye. Carrellee is also featured on the song Feel This Flame Unfold, a song from Bragolin’s album (March 2026). In April, Carrellee released a single Edge of Heaven, a collaboration with My Manifesto.

CD GHOST

CD Ghost is Los Angeles duo Cody Han and Blake Dimas, making music that lives between luminous synth pop and textured indie rock. They began in 2020, dotting their catalogue with EPs containing standout tracks such as “Undercurrent”, “Roll the Dice”, and “Silver for Sand”. In 2022, they released their debut full-length album, the synthpop nocturne Night Music (via Born Losers Records). Since then, the group has toured extensively, with their 2024 North American headline tour featuring several sold out dates in support of Vignette I (2023) and Vignette II (2024). The duo begins a new era in 2026 with the forthcoming album, When The Rain Stops, their most mature work to date. Sonically the project balances between two palettes: in-your-face dance beats with glossy synths, and warm, dreamy guitars accompanied by laid-back acoustic drums. When The Rain Stops plays on themes of fate, love, and disaster, ultimately grasping for something to hang onto while everything falls apart. This time around we find CD Ghost with their head in the clouds but with feet still firmly planted on the ground.
